Clay probably wins the company award for the “Most Enviable
Life For A Football Fan.”
It's difficult to top his typical
weekend schedule during the fall. As a local sports
talk show host and SEC football author (including Dixieland
Delight: A Football Season on the Road in the Southeastern Conference and an
upcoming book about University of Tennessee football), Clay often travels
to SEC cities, signs books, mingles with the crowd from the local university,
and attends a game – and of course writes about his experiences.
“Growing
up in the South, football is such a part of the fabric of the community,” said
Clay, a native of Nashville, Tenn. “So to get an opportunity
to write about something I love is pretty exciting.”
After getting
his law degree from Vanderbilt University, Clay signed
on with a Washington D.C.-based firm, where his work took him to St.
Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, a hub of financial activity for many of
his Fortune 100 clients. However, when he was presented with the opportunity
to be an online columnist for CBS Sports (formerly CBSSportsline.com),
he couldn't pass it up. At the same time, he wanted to continue practicing
law – and
needed to for financial reasons.
“Knowing what I wanted to
do with the column and my writing, the traditional practice of law
wasn't going to work,” he said. “Going into the managing
partner's office at 2 p.m. on a Friday and saying, ‘Well, I'm
outta here – gotta go to Gainesville for the game' wasn't going
to fly. I needed to find something a lot more flexible.”
